IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said Wednesday that Israel “would not allow the reality which existed before Operation Pillar of Defense to return.”
“The south is strong and stable, everything is under control,” he said, according to Israel’s Channel 2.
The comments came only hours after two rockets launched from Gaza struck Sderot early Wednesday morning, this a day after the relative quiet seen in recent months along the Gaza-Israel border was shattered when a projectile launched from Gaza landed in southern Israel. Two other projectiles had earlier been launched but never made it out of Palestinian territory. The two incidents Tuesday initiated an IAF airstrike on terrorist targets in Gaza, the first such operation since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense in November of last year.
Sderot Mayor David Buskila told Ynet, “I think the IDF’s response is adequate. We must not return to the reality that prevailed here before Pillar of Defense.”
IDF spokesman Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai told Israel’s Channel 2 that the rocket fire from Gaza “is a reminder that the threats have not disappeared.”
