Having launched the Committee for Prevention of Genetic Diseases after losing four children to Tay-Sachs disease, a fatal genetic disorder, Ekstein has been integral in eradicating a once endemic disease in the Orthodox Jewish community. With an increasing number of genetic disorders affecting the Ashkenazi and Sepahrdic Jewish communities, through his organization Ekstein has not only offered easy access to a host of screening tests but has also helped to raise awareness of Jewish genetic diseases.
