The ADL called on Palestinian leaders Thursday to condemn the murder of an Israeli Jew earlier in the week.
Evyatar Borovsky, an Israeli Jew, was murdered by Salam al-Zaghal, a Palestinian Arab terrorist on April 30 in the West Bank. The ADL called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to “unequivocally condemn” the murder.
“We are outraged and saddened by this murder,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “While Zaghal appears to have acted alone, his father’s comments welcoming the murder and referring to his son’s actions as a ‘duty for all Palestinians’ express a philosophy of hatred and violence towards Israelis that exists within segments of Palestinian society. The attack must be unequivocally condemned by Palestinian President Abbas and other senior Palestinian leaders. Not only have they thus far failed to do so, but Fatah, the political party of the Palestinian Authority, issued a statement on its Facebook page praising Zaghal as a ‘hero.'”
The ADL also expressed concern about anti-Arab violence that ensued following the attack which included Israeli Jews throwing rocks at Palestinian Arab cars and school buses, and setting local fields on fire.
“While we fully understand the sadness and anger felt by Israelis at Borovsky’s murder, Israeli settlers should not resort to vigilantism,” Mr. Foxman said.
