A kosher restaurant in Montreal was the target of an arsonist only days after a cafe in the area, also Jewish-owned, was on the receiving end of a similar attack.
A Molotov cocktail was tossed into Chops restaurant during opening hours, sometime before one in the morning Sunday. Nobody was injured and the sprinkler system was able to control the fire. A similar incident occurred at the restaurant in October.
Early Friday morning the Cafe Shalom, which is located in the same neighborhood as Chops, was also hit with a Molotov cocktail. The store was closed at the time and the sprinkler system was able to smother the flames.
Chops owner Ouri Ohayon dismissed the idea that the arson attacks were anti-Semitic.
“There are so many kosher restaurants in the area and this has never been an issue,” he told told The Algemeiner.
He said that grills had been placed on the front windows after the first incident and that there were plans to place a security guard on the premises. The restaurant was planning to be open Sunday night.
A Montreal police spokesperson also told The Algemeiner that it didn’t appear the arson attacks were spurred by any religious or ethnic hatred.
“It appears this is a matter of competition between business places right now more than based on any ethnic or religious reasons right now,” the spokesperson said.
A home in Montreal was also firebombed early Saturday morning. The Bill613 blog reported that a source said the home had a mezuzah. Montreal police could neither confirm this nor if there was any anti-Semitic motive behind the incident.
