A former Palestinian Arab convict has suffered serious injuries after setting himself on fire in front of the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Finance to protest a delay in his receipt of benefits conferred to former convicts, the Ma’an news agency reported Sunday.
A report from the Palestine Medical Complex said that Wissam Bilal Khalil Marouf, 21, suffered serious burns across his body while protesting the late payment of benefits to former criminals held in Israeli jails.
According to Ma’an, he claimed Israeli authorities left him crippled, and had brought his medical file with him as evidence for the ministry.
The former prisoner was released in April. Local Police said they have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to Israeli media, 6% of the PA budget goes toward benefits to former and current Palestinian convicts.
