At least three Muslim Brotherhood supporters were killed and scores wounded in protests near the Cairo headquarters of Egypt’s Republican Guard on Friday, although reports conflicted as to who was responsible for the deaths.
Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said via Twitter that the shootings were not by the Republican Guard, but by neighboring Military Police. El-Haddad said that it “is not known if [the shooting was] under panic or by order.”
AFP reported that gun shots could be heard coming from both the Republican Guard and the pro-Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators.
According to Al Arabiya, the Republican Guard said that it did not use live ammunition against the protesters.
A military spokesman, cited by Reuters, also denied using live fire against protesters in Cairo. Only blank rounds and tear gas have been used, Reuters quoted him as saying.
An AFP reporter at the scene reported seeing two bodies covered by white sheets and a third man, apparently lifeless, with a gaping wound in his head.
The Muslim Brotherhood and their allies had called for protests Friday against the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, in what was deemed “the Friday of Rejection.”
According to Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, pro-Morsi marches were also taking place in Alexandria, Beheira, and in Minya. The marching came after a tense night, when forces loyal to former president Muhamed Morsi attacked the El-Arish airport and six police stations in Sinai.
