At the start of his weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called attention yet again to the threat of a nuclear armed Iran, saying that a month after Iranian elections, Israel insists that Iran live up to its nuclear commitments.
“A month has passed since the Iranian elections and Iran is continuing to press quickly forward on developing a military nuclear ability. It is expanding and advancing its enrichment facilities and, at the same time, its developing its ballistic missiles capability. Again, these are threats not only against us but against the entire West and the East as well,” he said.
“We are determined to insist on our demands, which must be the demands of the international community. One, to stop all enrichment. Two, to remove all enriched material. Three, to close the illegal nuclear facility in Qom. We believe that now, more than ever, in light of Iran’s progress, it is important to intensify the economic sanctions and place a credible military option before Iran,” Netanyahu added.
On Friday, the Foreign Ballistic and Cruise Missile Threat Assessment, prepared by the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, said that Iran could develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015.
The report said that since 2008, Iran has conducted multiple successful launches of the two-stage Safir space launch vehicle and has also revealed the larger two-stage Simorgh SLV, which could serve as a test bed for developing ICBM technologies. Since 2010, Iran has revealed the Qiam-1 SRBM, the fourth generation Fateh-110 SRBM, and claims to be mass-producing anti-ship ballistic missiles. Iran has modified its Shahab 3 medium-range ballistic missile to extend its range and effectiveness and also claims to have deployed the two-stage solid-propellant Sejjil MRBM.
