An Israeli official has disclosed that the country is prepared to deal with the threat posed by the powerful S-300 air defense missile system promised by Russia to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, should Russian President Putin deliver on its promise to supply it, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.
Brig.-Gen. Eitan Eshel, head of research and development for the Israel Defense Ministry’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, said the IDF had access to technological solutions – both operational and under development – to the threat posed by the Russian S-300 air defense system.
Moscow has vowed to deliver on a contract it signed with the Syrian regime long before a civil war broke out in the country.
Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said after a meeting Monday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow that plans to receive the S-300 delivery were still in place.
“All agreements between Russia and Syria in the area of arms deliveries are in place,” the Syrian deputy prime minister said.
Israel fears that the anti-aircraft system could make it more difficult to halt the transfer of chemical weapons from Syria to terrorist groups, and make it more difficult to end a conflict that has already left 100,000 dead.
