The secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group, has called for a protest against a return to recently announced peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority , Ma’an News Agency reported Friday.
The PFLP is the second largest of the groups making up the Palestinian Liberation Organization, with Fatah , led by President Mahmoud Abbas, being the largest. The group opposes negotiations with Israel.
In a letter received Friday from Shatta prison, where he is serving a 30-year sentence, Ahmad Saadat urged Palestinians to “break all the barriers of silence and step up to defend the national rights that are being threatened in this critical phase in the region.”
The PFLP leader was seized by Israeli forces in 2006 from a Palestinian Authority jail in Jericho for heading an “illegal terrorist organization” and for his responsibility for all actions carried out by the organization, specifically his role in the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rahavam Zeevi in 2001.
According to Ma’an, Saadat wrote that protests would achieve unity and start a new national phase that will adopt “resistance,” a Palestinian euphemism for terrorism, in all its forms.
US Secretary of State John Kerry announced on July 19 that Israeli and PLO leaders had agreed in principle to resume direct talks after a three year freeze in negotiations.
Officials said on Thursday that negotiations would commence Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
