Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a letter to Spain’s prime minister Thursday offering his condolences and support following the country’s devastating train crash that left 80 dead.
“As always, Israel stands ready to assist the people of Spain in any way it can,” Netanyahu wrote in his letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Brey.
The train carrying 218 passengers crashed and broke up a few miles from the station in the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.
Israeli President Shimon Peres also expressed his sadness in a letter to the Spanish King Juan Carlos, writing that Israel is praying for a ” full and speedy recovery for those wounded by this terrible disaster…”
Government officials said 140 people were also injured in the accident, Spain’s worst train wreck since the 1940s.
