Egypt closed its border crossing with the Gaza Strip indefinitely on Thursday, a day after widespread violence in the country left hundreds dead, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported.
Mahir Abu Sabha, director of border crossings for the Hamas-run government in Gaza, said in a statement that the Rafah crossing would be closed heading in both directions “due to bad security conditions in North Sinai district,” according to the Ma’an report.
Egyptian authorities also closed the border crossing for several days after the military overthrew Islamist Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in early July, and later reopened it, at a reduced traffic capacity. According to Ma’an, only holders of visas and passports from foreign countries, Egyptian citizens and Gaza patients have been allowed to leave Gaza via the crossing since the July coup.
