A combined US and Israel naval exercise code named ”Reliant Mermaid 103″ ended on Thursday, after a week and a half of training in the Mediterranean involving the simulation of a variety of search and rescue scenarios, the IDF said in a statement.
“Reliant Mermaid” was not prompted by any specific real-world events, the IDF said. Vessels participating in the exercise included a guided-missile destroyer from the U.S. 6th Fleet, as well as missile boats from the Israeli Navy.
The IDF said several combined naval exercises have taken place in recent months, including with the Italian and Greek naval forces.
The exercise was included in the Israeli Navy’s annual training schedule.
The IDF said it sees the exercise as a valuable opportunity to learn from its U.S. Navy counterparts and as part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to increase cooperation with the United States military.
