The Jewish High Holidays aren’t high times if you’re on Broadway. Ticket sales dropped 10 percent last week to $18.4 million, reported the Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners.
Jewish-themed productions were hit particularly hard. “Soul Doctor,” about the singing Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, saw sales decline by more than a third, to $111,000.
“Annie,” the revival that’s closing early next year, had its worst week since previews began in October 2012 — $596,000. Likewise, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” sold $791,000, its slowest week since November, 2010, when it began its extended preview period.
In fact, the only shows that didn’t see a decline in sales were the ones not playing the previous seven days.
Broadway can probably count on another slow weekend this week, as Yom Kippur falls on Friday night and doesn’t end until the following evening.
