UN Watch, a watchdog NGO, denounced the United Nations Human Rights Council Tuesday for behaving with “apathy, banality and triteness” towards Syria while discriminating against Israel.
“Three weeks have passed since Syria gassed to death hundreds of its own men, women, and children — and still the council closes its eyes, refusing our call for an emergency session,” UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer said, delivering testimony before the Council.
Neuer attacked the credibility of the Council, asking, “Can a human rights body that ignores this atrocity be deemed credible, effective, or in any way relevant?”
During the session, Venezuela, Pakistan, the UAE, Turkey and Iran all censured Israel while failing to address Syria or any other human rights perpetrators.
“In the UN Human Rights Council, there is an Agenda Item 4 that deals with human rights violations all over the world – including in ‘Jeffersonian democracies’ like Libya, Syria and Sudan. Israel, however, is the only country in the world that is singled out for a special Agenda Item 7,” Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, told The Algemeiner last month. Israel broke ties to the Council in March 2012, to protest what it called “biased treatment.”
On Tuesday, again, the pattern continued, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Neuer.
“Why is it, that of the 10 Agenda Items for this session, only one specific country is listed, and it’s Israel — whose hospitals, as we speak, are quietly treating dozens of Syria’s injured victims?” he asked the human rights body.
“Let us state the truth: if the UN allocated just one-hundredth of the moral outrage it uses against the only democracy in the Middle East, murderous dictators like Assad might have been shamed, isolated and weakened, instead of elevated, celebrated and strengthened as champions of human rights,” Neuer concluded.
