According to a new poll, New York City Public Advocate and mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio has a commanding lead over Republican rival Joe Lhota among Jewish voters in the upcoming New York mayoral elections.
The first general election poll, The Wall Street Journal-NBC 4 New York-Marist poll, released Tuesday evening showed him leading among Jewish voters (who make up roughly 17% of the electorate on election day) by 20 points with 56% to Lhota’s 36%.
De Blasio’s lead among the general population is even more impressive, 43 points higher than Lhota’s, 65% to 22%.
40% of Jewish voters in New York City — compared to 59% among the general public — think de Blasio’s ideology is about right, while 43% believe he is too liberal. When it comes to voters’ perceptions of Lhota, an equal 40% report his ideology is about right. 30% think he is too conservative, while 5% believe he is too liberal and 25% are unsure.
In the Democratic primary on September 10th, exit polls showed de Blasio trounced his competition when it came to the Jewish vote.
Following the primary, his campaign offered this statement to The Algemeiner:
“Bill de Blasio has a long and deep-rooted relationship with the Jewish community and is incredibly proud of the support he’s received. This community, like so many others, was ready for a candidate talking about equality across the five boroughs and fairness for all families in this city. They know Bill has the integrity and leadership to take our city forward.”
