Israeli President Shimon Peres said he listened to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s “nice” speech at the United Nations General Assembly last week, but thought it was “based on a false reality,” as Iran continues to develop nuclear weapons capabilities.
In an answer to a reporter’s question, after speaking at the International Court of Justice, in the Hague, Peres said, “Rouhani’s speech was nice but it was based on a false reality as Iranian centrifuges, at this very moment, continue to work and produce enriched uranium for a nuclear bomb, the program to develop long range missiles which can carry nuclear warheads is being expanded and the Revolutionary Guards continue to support terror organizations.”
“We listen to the speeches at the United Nations, but the only way to test Iran’s intentions is by deeds and not just words,” Peres said. “The Iranian nuclear threat is not just an Israeli problem but for the whole world which doesn’t want to be threatened by one country.”
Last week, Rouhani delivered an address to the UN and then later had a telephone call with U.S. President Barack Obama, but the Israeli administration warned that his conciliatory remarks were a diversion and delay tactic to allow Iran to complete its nuclear aspirations before the international community can stop its progress.
