Teen pop-sensation Justin Bieber addressed his contentious message left in the guest book at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, in April, though his response may have been as tongue-in-cheek as his original comments.

In an interview with actor and comedian Zack Galifianakis on his deadpan web-series “Between Two Ferns,” Bieber explained the message that prompted an internet uproar.

“I went to the Anne Frank Museum and they said that she was into pop culture, and at the end of an over two-hour visit I said I wish she would have been a Belieber,” he said, referring to the nickname he bestows upon his fans.

“Did you mean that if the Nazis had not taken her and she lived to be in her 80s, she would have liked your music, presumably due to loss of hearing?” Galifianikis asked. “Or–because I can see how this could get lost in translation–I think that you were talking about time travel, and that you think if you could build a machine and go back to visit Anne Frank that she would have been a Belieber then. Is that true because I don’t know what to beliebe?”

Bieber, remaining composed in the face of such hard-hitting questions, responded, “I want to be a time traveler.”
