Court documents showed that dead Boston Marathon bombing mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev participated in the murder of three Jews on September 11, 2011, in the Boston suburb of Waltham, FOX News Boston reported on Wednesday.
The Boston Globe said authorities allege that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 20, and then 26-year-old Tamerlan, ethnic Chechens from Russia, planned and carried out the twin bombings near the finish-line of the marathon on April 15. Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured in the attack. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev faces 30 federal charges, including using a weapon of mass destruction and 16 other charges that carry the possibility of the death penalty. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in a gun battle with police as authorities hunted down the brothers in the aftermath of the bombings.
The newly-filed court records attributed the information to the suspect’s also now-dead friend, Ibragim Todashev. FOX News said the disclosure, made by federal prosecutors in the terror case against Tsarnaev’s younger brother, Dzhokhar, is the first official statement linking the deceased elder Tsarnaev to the Waltham murders for which he was also suspected.
“(A)ccording to (Tsarnaev’s friend Ibragim) Todashev, Tamerlan Tsarnaev participated in the Waltham triple homicide,” prosecutors wrote in a motion filed on Monday, FOX News said.
In Waltham, three young, Jewish men, Brendan Mess, a boxer described as Tsarnaev’s friend, Raphael Teken and Erik Weissman, were murdered, their throats slit, and their bodies covered with marijuana and $5,000 in cash, apparently to mislead police about their demise. No information about the motive was revealed. Neither was the fact that all three of the victims were Jews.
Regarding Todashev, FOX News said he had either implicated himself, Tamerlan or both of them in the murders before something happened that set him against the FBI and Massachusetts State Police who were interviewing him. They responded by shooting and killing Todashev.
Todashev’s father has hired an attorney, Barry Cohen of Tampa, Florida , who told FOX News he doesn’t know what Todashev told authorities and he doesn’t know who committed the Waltham murders.
