A satirical news website is making real news with an article filled with slurs against Jews and the Jewish owner of the American football team, The Washington Redskins, CBS News New York and the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.
“The Redskins,” an 81-year old team name, is now more widely being seen as offensive to Native Americans, leading to a national conversation that even U.S. President Barack Obama has entered – he thinks a name change is a good idea – while prominent TV sportscaster Bob Costas said Redskins is “an insult” and “a slur” during a Sunday Night Football editorial earlier this month. However, the Jewish owner of the team, Dan Snyder, thinks the name should stay.
The Onion, which publishes straight-seeming news with very biting satire that often slips under the radar and is misinterpreted as real news, has been following this very politically incorrect story closely.
It’s take on Monday was to show Snyder defending his position, that Redskins is “absolutely not a racial slur by any means,” by casually adding offensive Jewish slurs to describe Snyder whenever his name is mentioned in the article. The Onion described Snyder as “the Washington Redskins’ kike owner,” ” the hook-nosed kike,” and “the shifty-eyed hebe.”
The Onion headlined a previous article about the Redskins controversy as, “Report: Redskins’ Name Only Offensive If You Think About What It Means.”
CBS News found the reaction on Twitter to range from “applause to outrage.”
“The Onion makes its point by crossing the line,” one person tweeted, while another wrote that The Onion failed “in a big, pretty disgusting, way.” The publication Slate responded with a simple “Whoa.”
