The former wife of ex-International Monetary Fund Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is set to inherit a painting worth as much as $100 million, following its discovery in an apartment building in Germany last year, the Daily Mail reported Friday.
Anne Sinclair’s maternal grandfather, the late French art dealer Paul Rosenberg, had the Henri Matisse painting, titled “Sitting Woman,” confiscated as he fled Nazi Germany in the 1940s.
Chris Marinello, of the group Art Recovery International, told the Daily Mail that he met with the Rosenberg family on Thursday and had drafted a letter for the German authorities claiming ownership of the Matisse.
Marinello said that he was confident the family would regain ownership of the artwork, which was among the more-than 1,400 paintings found last year at the home of Cornelius Gurlitt, 80. His father, Hildebrand, had been employed by the Nazis to sell art considered “degenerate.” Many were bought at reduced rates from fleeing Jewish collectors.
Following the war, Hildebrand claimed that the collection had been destroyed in the bombing of Dresden. However, the collection turned up after customs agents caught Gurlitt on a train from Switzerland with an envelope containing 9,000 Euros in cash, eliciting a search of his apartment, where the art was found.
