Jewish boxer Yuri Foreman scored a stunning first-round knockout victory Tuesday night at a bout in Hollywood, Florida, continuing a stellar comeback that has seen him win five straight match-ups since returning to the ring from a knee injury.
Foreman, the former WBA world light middleweight champion, stunned the crowd and opponent Javier Gomez of Mexico with a lead left hand to lay Gomez flat on his back just a minute and a half into the first round. It was Foreman’s first victory by knockout since 2006.
“It felt good. It’s been a long time waiting for that,” Foreman told The Algemeiner, as he readied to board a flight back to his home-base in Brooklyn, NY.
Foreman suffered a nasty knee injury in a title defense match against Miguel Cotto in 2010 at Yankee Stadium and has been slowly working himself back into peak condition.
Asked whether he feels as if he’s on pace to return to his championship form Foreman went a step further, telling The Algemeiner, “I’m getting better than that.”
Foreman fared better than fellow Orthodox boxer Dmitriy Salita. On Saturday night, Salita lost for only the second time in his career, to Gabriel Bracero by decision 97-92, 99-90, 100-89.
