JNS.org – The first baby born in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) field hospital in the Typhoon Haiyan-ravaged Philippines was named “Israel,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit tweeted Friday.
The IDF also shared a video of the baby’s first moments. The Israeli army’s 148-member IDF Medical and Rescue Response Team, which is being coordinated by Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center, arrived in the Philippines on Wednesday with more than 100 tons of humanitarian and medical supplies from Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Friday spoke with his Filipino counterpart, Secretary of National Defense Voltaire Gazmin, to express his solidarity and sympathy.
“The Israeli people feel the pain of the Filipino people and stands by you at this difficult hour,” Ya’alon said in a statement. “I am hopeful that the IDF mission to the Philippines will do as much as it can to save lives.”
