A majority of Americans support easing economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program, but fewer believe the deal would actually prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll revealed Tuesday.
While 64% of respondents in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll support a diplomatic agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program, 60% remain skeptical that such a deal would result in the Islamic Republic halting its drive for a nuclear bomb.
Among those who have say they have no confidence a deal would halt Iran’s nuclear drive, the percentage (38 %) who support such a pact drops dramatically from those who do think such a deal would be effective (80 %).
Differences also run along partisan lines, with 72% of Democrats supporting a diplomatic pact, 63% of independents and 57 % of Republicans.
By political stance, 70% of both liberals and moderates are in support of a deal, as are 55 % of conservatives, and 45% of respondents who identify as “very” conservative.
