Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas gave U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, at a meeting in Ramallah late Thursday, a letter laying out “Palestinian red lines,” a source on the Palestinian side told AFP, Lebanon’s Daily Star reported on Friday.
The popular “red lines” phrase referred to U.S. President Barack Obama’s conditions regarding Syria, where he said the use of chemical weapons would cross a “red line” that could trigger intervention.
Following the Thursday meeting, the source told AFP, “President Abbas has rejected the ideas presented by the secretary of state,” including U.S. proposals for Israel to keep troops along the border with Jordan, on what would be part of a future PA state.
No further information about the content of Abbas’ “red lines” was offered by AFP’s source.
Kerry is in Jerusalem today for further negotiations. Unlike previous attempts, the current negotiations have been notable for the remarkably few leaks to the press, often blamed for destroying the productivity of the secret talks.
