A Jewish entrepreneur, whose marriage to a Christian woman prompted him to start selling Jewish decorations for Christmas trees, won a deal with fashion mogul Daymond John, in the latest episode of the hit TV series “Shark Tank.”
In the show, which features pitches from businessmen to the investor “sharks,” Morri Chowaiki introduces his product with a decidedly Jewish themed pitch, opening with “hello gefilte sharks.”
Asking for a $50,o00 investment in exchange for 15% of his company Chowaiki says that “Chrismakah is the most wonderful time of the year, a time when interfaith families can play spin the dreidel while kissing under the mistletoe.”
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if interfaith families could find a way to truly capture the spirit of Chrismakah? Well mazal tov, because now they can,” he says, introducing his product, the “Hanukkah tree topper.”
Responding to criticism over what the “Sharks” said was a limited market for the product, Chowaiki argued that “nearly 50% of all Jewish people in the United States have married somebody of another faith.”
After Chowaiki is turned down by four of the “Sharks” because of the company’s limited sales, John decides to take a gamble on the business and offers $50,000 for 35% of the outfit. His offer is accepted.
“You know I did a deal with a rabbi,” John says, referring to a past deal he sealed with a Chabad Rabbi who pitched an iPhone product company.
