Israeli Defense Forces Sergeant Major Shlomi Cohen, who was killed Sunday on Israel’s northern border by a Lebanese sniper, left a baby daughter who hadn’t even reached her first birthday, Israel’s Ma’ariv daily reported on Monday.
“She won’t merit that her father will bring her up. She has not even celebrated her first birthday,” his parents, Joseph and Cookie Cohen, said in tears, speaking to Ma’ariv about their lost son, and their 11-month-old granddaughter. The last time they saw their son, he was at a dinner party hosted by his wife’s parents, “It was like a farewell event,” Cohen’s father said.
An aunt, Hannah Sharabi, described her nephew as, “The salt of the earth and handsome. He was impossible to ignore. He loved the Army, it was his second love.”
Cohen served in the Navy and then graduated as an engineer and worked in the electronics businesses as a career.
According to Sharabi, Cohen was on his way home in Afula and after receiving instructions by telephone to return urgently to Rosh Hanikra he was shot dead by the border post.
