The Abdallah Azzam Brigades, considered to be al-Qaeda’s arm in Lebanon, vowed it would carry on fallen leader Majid al-Majid’s mission to attack Iran, Hezbollah and “the Jewish oppressors,” Lebanon’s Daily Star reported on Tuesday.
“The project of its leader, Majid al-Majid, will be maintained by attacking Iran and its party [Hezbollah] even after his death,” the Abdallah Azzam Brigades said in a statement, adding they would defend the Sunni community and target what it said were “the Jewish oppressors.”
“Majid passed away after he laid the foundations for an ambitious project and after years of raising up men capable of managing his project after his passing,” the statement said. In the statement, the party said Majid “personally oversaw the two bombings against the Iranian Embassy in Beirut last November and he directly supervised preparations and the execution.”
On November 19, 2013, two suicide bombers attacked the Iranian embassy in Beirut, killing 30 people including an Iranian diplomat.
Last month, the Lebanese Army arrested Majid, who entered Lebanon in December for treatment of advanced kidney disease. He died while at a military hospital in Beirut. Lebanon repatriated his remains to Saudi Arabia last week.
Majid was wanted by the U.S., Lebanon and Saudi Arabia for plotting and carrying out terrorist attacks.
