Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s surprise visit to Amman, Jordan on Thursday was convened in order to find out details about Jordanian King Abdullah’s recent meeting in Iran, according to pan-Arab daily Al Quds Al Arabi.
Two days prior to Netanyahu’s meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah, the monarch met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
The meeting between Israel’s Prime Minister and Jordan’s King was different than previous conversations between the two leaders, which have tended to focus on regional developments as well as the Palestinian-Arab issue, Al Quds Al Arabi said.
According to the paper, Netanyahu is concerned about a possible strengthening of ties between Amman and Tehran. The Israeli Premier hoped to learn whether and how King Abdullah was seeking to cultivate economic ties between his country and the Islamic Republic.
More generally, Netanyahu wanted to see whether Jordan’s King was throwing his country’s support behind the rulers of Iran, Al Quds Al Arabi reported.
Such a development would be a major cause for Israeli concern, Israel’s Channel 2 reported. Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty twenty years ago. A warming of relations between Amman and a country which has stated its intention to destroy Israel could prove to be problematic for the Jewish state, Channel 2 said.
