Palestine Legislative Council Member: Abbas’s New Road Map to Peace an Attempt to ‘Deceive Israel’

The new road map to peace that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas unveiled during an interview with the New York Times over the weekend is little more than a ploy by which to “deceive Israel,” according to Palestine Legislative Council Member Hassan Kharisha, Israeli daily Ma’ariv reported on Tuesday.
Many Palestinian Arabs under the rule of the PA were taken aback by Abbas’s proposal that an American-led NATO force could patrol a future Palestinian state indefinitely, with troops positioned throughout the territory, at all crossings, and within Jerusalem.
Indeed, many Arabs find the thought of NATO forces in a Palestinian state abhorrent, Ma’ariv said. According to Kharisha, “This is but an excuse to appeal directly to the United Nations as well as attempt to deceive Israel into thinking that it can actually provide the Palestinians their rights.”
The Palestine Legislative Council member also implied that the timing of Abbas’s initiative is suspect. “Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] only made his suggestion after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu had sought to scuttle the Palestinian issue [of independence],” he said.
Kharisha asserted that a costly mistake was made six months ago to resume negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority since the peace talks are now being conducted by Arabs who do not have the Palestinian people’s best interest at heart, Ma’ariv said.
Furthermore, according to Kharisha, the secrecy under which the negotiations have been conducted to date has only perpetuated this mistake, Ma’ariv reported.
