The Republican and Democratic leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives, Eric Cantor and Steny Hoyer, stood together on the dais at the 2014 AIPAC Policy Conference to announce their shared commitment to stand for “Israel’s safety and security” by working to stop Iran from being able to “build or acquire a nuclear weapon.”
“For Steny and me, this issue extends beyond partisan politics,” Cantor told the supportive audience.
Hoyer said, “As leaders of Congress, we’re committed to Israel’s safety and security, that’s why Eric and I have authored a letter to the president that underscores our common commitment to ensure that Iran does not develop, build or acquire a nuclear weapon,” and the crowed roared.
“Iran’s leaders must understand that they cannot use negotiations simply as a means to buy time while the centrifuges spin,” Hoyer said. “And they must know all options remain on the table to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
Cantor said, “Congress has consistently provided leadership on this issue for nearly 20 years and we will continue to do so by ensuring that Iran continues to face powerful sanctions, by ensuring that it abides by the interim agreement and by making clear that any final agreement with Iran must dismantle its nuclear infrastructure.”
“This dismantlement must include enrichment and reprocessing facilities such that Iran is prevented from pursuing both the uranium and plutonium pathways to a bomb,” Cantor said. “It should also require Iran to come completely clean on its past and present nuclear-related activities and subject Iran to intrusive verification and monitoring to ensure compliance.”
Hoyer said, “We want members of the House to join us in this statement, and we ask you to urge them to do so, because when we stand together on this issue we send a powerful and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime.”
