Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman responded on his Facebook page to an Egyptian court’s decision to outlaw Hamas on Tuesday, noting that the terror group’s “representatives continue to sit here, in the Knesset,” Israel’s Channel 10 reported.
“Israel Beiteinu (Lieberman’s political party) will continue to push to have people affiliated with Hamas who are operating inside of Israel classified as outside the law,” Lieberman added.
The Cairo court on Tuesday effectively removed the Hamas movement from Egyptian public life by defining the group as a terrorist organization, Channel 10 said. As a result, all Hamas-related activities are now illegal and the organization’s assets will be frozen.
The court ruling marks the crescendo of tensions that have been building between Egypt’s rulers and the Hamas group since the overthrow of Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated politician who served as the country’s president from June 30, 2012 to July 3, 2013.
Since Morsi’s ouster, Egypt has accused Hamas of launching terrorist attacks across the country, including in the Sinai Peninsula.
Hamas has condemned the Egyptian court’s ruling, claiming that it harms the national aspirations of the Palestinian people, Channel 10 reported.
