A New York barber offered a Pre-Passover “only Jewish” discount on haircuts for the “matzoh-munching crowd,” the New York Daily News reported on Friday.
Dominican-American Miguel Sanchez, 30, proprietor of the Chano Barber Shop, in Washington Heights, offered a $12 “Pre Passover Haircut Special”compared to his $15 full fee.
“I am not being racist,” Sanchez told the Daily News. “I am just giving a good price for your holiday. If you want to pay $15 it’s up to you.”
The Daily News said, “Immediately following Passover is a period of 40 days known as the Omer in which Jews don’t cut their hair, among other restrictions, making the offer all the more enticing. Nearly two dozen kosher customers came to Chano because of the offer, Sanchez boasted as he showed off a second edited sign that omitted the discriminatory disclaimer.”
“One of my customers said — ‘you want it just for them? Put (the sign) in Hebrew,'” Sanchez added.
The Daily News described Washington Heights as home to New York’s fastest-growing Jewish enclave, according to statistics from the UJA-Federation, because of its affordable rents. The newspaper interviewed Key Food Supermarket assistant manager Daviel Lopez who said, in addition to a kosher aisle and frozen food section, the store has adopted extra hours to accommodate Jews.
“We stay open a hour later Wednesday and Thursday because their Sabbath is Saturday and they have to prepare,” Lopez told the Daily News. “Then we offer in-store specials. But we don’t discriminate. You have to be careful.”
With Passover not until April 14, some Jewish locals appreciate the barbershop sale, but thought Chano was jumping the gun.
“He’s a little too early,” said Oren Hiller, executive director of the Mt. Sinai Jewish Center, across from the barber shop. Hiller said the revamped sales pitch, which omitted “Jews only” was more “tasteful.”
“Everyone likes a sale,” Hiller told the Daily News.
