The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said a Jordanian killed at the crossing between the West Bank and Jordan on Monday shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great” in Arabic) while charging at Israeli soldiers with an iron crowbar before being shot dead, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Tuesday.
Estimating that their lives were in danger, soldiers from the 76th Battalion of the Combat Engineering Brigade opened fire on Raed Alaa el-Deen Za’eiter, a Nablus-born jurist with Jordanian citizenship, at the Allenby Bridge crossing.
The suspect had at one point also attempted to snatch a rifle from one of the soldiers, according to dozens of eyewitnesses who were questioned.
The IDF said it will continue to investigate the shooting even though the soldiers at the border crossing acted in accordance with the rules of engagement by first firing at the suspect’s legs.
Following the incident at the Jordanian-Israeli border, riots broke out Monday night in Amman, where Jordanian protesters tried to get close to the Israeli embassy. Several anti-Israeli slogans were chanted at the demonstration, including “No Zionist embassy in an Arab country” and “The people want to destroy the peace agreement.”
