A top-level trade delegation accompanying British Prime Minister David Cameron to Jerusalem is expected to announce some $100 million (£60 million) of business deals between Israel and the UK, British media reported on Wednesday.
The UK Telegraph said the deals were between British and Israeli technology firms, while the UK Jewish Chronicle said the companies involved were in the regenerative medicine and renewable energy businesses. The Jewish Chronicle added that investment in medical research on dementia and to open Israeli medical companies in England would be announced separately.
The Telegraph said delegates include Mick Davis, CEO of mining company Xstrata, and chairman of the UK’s Holocaust Commission, and Antoine Mattar, director of CCC, a major Middle East construction firm, and co-chair of the Palestinian Britain Business Council. Other delegates include UK Trade Minister Lord Livingstone, Xavier Rolet, CEO of the London Stock Exchange, and Labor peer Lord Stone, who also runs a project to help Palestinian Arab farmers sell their produce.
Other members on the trip from the Holocaust Commission, according to The Jewish Chronicle, include Sir Peter Bazalgette, Dame Helen Hyde, Shoah survivor Ben Helfgott and Natasha Kaplinsky.
Other business figures include Nicola Cobbold, chief executive of the Portland Trust, which promotes economic development for Israelis and Palestinian Arabs, Clive Dorsman, of Talk Talk, which works with Israeli tech companies on broadband expansion and Dominic Rose, head of strategy at ASOS .
MP’s from Cameron’s Conservative Party on the trip include Conservative Friends of Israel chairman James Clappison, Hendon MP Matthew Offord and Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer.
In addition to the UK-Israel business deals, a £3 million funding grant to stimulate the Palestinian economy will also be announced, The Telegraph said.
