The Waters family, of the Boston suburb of Framingham, are losing their patience with Indian bureaucracy as they try to repatriate the body of their daughter, Paula, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on the Indian island of Goa, on Saturday, for a Jewish burial.
According to a report on Thursday by Boston’s Channel 5 WCVB News, the Waters family “said in keeping with their Jewish faith, they need to bring Paula back home to Framingham to be buried immediately, but aren’t getting anywhere with government officials.”
Alan Waters was quoted as saying, “We have to get her home, we have to get arrangements made here, we have to get her buried and then we have to commence our seven days and our 30 days of mourning.”
His wife, Roberta, said that when she heard of her daughter’s death it was the worst moment of her entire life.
“You go from, you think you didn’t hear right, to are you sure it’s her,” she was quoted as saying.
The Waters family said they are working with a rabbi locally and in India to try and facilitate the process. They also asked Secretary of State John Kerry, who was formerly a Massachusetts Senator, for help.
WCVB quoted Glenn Johnson, senior adviser to Kerry, who said, “State Department employees both in Washington and India have been actively involved with their Indian counterparts and other parties to expedite the return of Paula Waters’ remains to her family.”
“As the father of two daughters, [Kerry] can especially empathize with their loss, grief at this time, and interest in bringing Paula home as soon as possible,” he added.
Johnson said the State Department would remain engaged until Paula is brought back to her family.
