Israeli forces used gunfire to drown out the name of historical Jewish adversary Haman, during a reading of the Scroll of Esther at an Israel Defense Forces firing range, a video making the rounds on Facebook shows.
The story of Esther is read during this weekend’s Jewish festival of Purim and is recounted in Hebrew from a traditional Megillah scroll. When the name of Haman, who plotted to destroy the Jewish people, is pronounced, it is customary for listeners to drown it out with noise.
In the footage, a group of IDF soldiers, stands armed with automatic rifles and their eyes fixed on the desert horizon as one soldier reads the scroll. When Haman is mentioned the soldiers fire at targets in the distance, while a commander reminds them to only fire “one bullet” each.
On Facebook, one user wrote, “This is how Megillah should be read!”
The Israel Defense Forces are currently on high alert after Islamic Jihad and Hamas bombarded the south with rocket fire this week.
