JNS.org – Thousands of Jordanians, including many affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, protested outside the Israeli Embassy in Amman on Friday demanding that Jordan sever ties with Israel over the death of Palestinian-Jordanian judge Raed Zueter, who was fatally shot after attacking an Israeli soldier at a border crossing on Monday.
“We will not accept less than the annulment of the peace treaty and deportation the Israeli ambassador and to announce that Jews are enemies for our nation,” Hammam Saeed, the general secretary of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, told The Associated Press.
On Wednesday, Jordanian lawmakers met to discuss cutting ties with Israel. But on Friday, Jordan’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour told the parliament that it was not in Jordan’s national interest to end the peace deal with Israel.
According to an Israeli investigation, Zueter was shot after charging and attempting to take a soldier’s rifle while shouting “Allahu Akbar.” On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement of regret on the incident and promised to form a joint investigation.
