Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan may visit Israel in the near future, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Thursday.
According to various Turkish media outlets, David Meidan, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has met with Haqqani Fidan, the head of Turkey’s Energy and Defense Committee. During the meeting the two men spoke about the possibility of Erdogan traveling to Jerusalem in the coming months, according to the report.
The development is part of broader rapprochement efforts between the two governments, according to the Turkish news reports. Israel and Turkey are also planning to re-open their embassies in both countries, Channel 2 said.
Erdogan has said any reconciliation between Ankara and Jerusalem would be contingent upon an Israeli commitment to end its security blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
An Israeli government source flatly denied the fence-mending stories coming out of Turkey. According to the source, not only has there been no agreement about an Erdogan visit or a reopening of embassies, but the alleged meeting between Meidan and Fidan never even took place.
