Online travel deal website TravelSupermarket listed Tel Aviv, Israel, as one of the most searched-for destinations among Twitter users in 2014, the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Thursday.
The Israeli city ranked No. 6 on a list of the top 10 “hot spots” that are garnering the most traveler interest online so far this year. TravelSupermarket analyzed data from across its site and combined it with Twitter metrics on what countries and cities are most talked about by users to compile the list.
Surprisingly, the coastal town of Rovinj in Croatia has garnered the most attention online taking the No. 1 spot, while Poland’s capital Warsaw came in second place and St. Petersburg in third. Rounding off the top 10 is Gothenburg, Sweden.
“We’ve been keeping an eye on which destinations have been searched for over the last year to uncover the top holiday hot-spots that have seen an unusual increase in interest,” Bob Atkinson, a travel expert at TravelSupermarket, said. “It’s often the case that new destinations start to come into our psyche as a result of a music or sports events, or even film and TV programmes from dramas to documentaries and we find our attention suddenly drawn towards a new place we might never have considered before.”
