Hezbollah was responsible for a March 14 roadside bomb attack on an Israeli patrol in Shabaa Farms, along the border with Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in an interview with Lebanese daily As-Safir on Monday.
Nasrallah told As-Safir that the bombing was “the work of the resistance,” according to an English translation in the Lebanon Daily Star also on Monday.
The attack, he said, “sent a message that the resistance is still capable of fighting Israel,” even as its fighters back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his ongoing war against rebels.
Nasrallah said the attack was also in response to an Israeli air raid on a Hezbollah base in the Bekaa Valley in February.
“The story is not about rules of engagement, but about deterrence,” Nasrallah said in the interview.
In response to the attack, Israel fired tank rounds and artillery into southern Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces said, on March 15. The IDF said the shelling was in retaliation for the bomb that targeted Israeli soldiers patrolling the border. No injuries were reported on either side.
On the war in Syria, Nasrallah said Assad was maintaining the upper hand.
“The danger of the Syrian regime falling has ended, and we have exceeded the risk of partition,” he said.
