Khamenei Says Iran Nuclear Development ‘Won’t Stop or Slow Down’
by Shiryn Ghermezian
Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei told his Twitter followers on Friday that the Islamic Republic has no plans to cease its nuclear research and development.
“Nuclear achievements are not going to stop and no one has the right to trade them and no one will do so,” read a message posted to an unverified Twitter account widely believed to be Khamenei’s.
The comment was accompanied by a graphic showing the leader speaking before a crowded room. The picture’s headline, quoting Khamenei, read, “Iran’s nuclear research and development activities won’t stop or slow down.”
On Saturday, Khamenei posted another comment claiming that Iran had no intention to develop nuclear weapons.
“[U.S. officials] themselves know that not having #nuclear weapons is the definite policy of the Islamic Republic of #Iran,” he wrote.
Commenting on the Ayatollah’s flurry of remarks, blogger Elder of Ziyon wrote, “The next day the Iranian regime realized that this [the first poster] didn’t look good for them, so they sent out [the second] clarifying poster.”
Earlier in April, negotiators from Iran and six world powers met in Vienna to discuss a final agreement aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program. Speaking to nuclear scientists in Iran’s capital recently, Khamenei said the Islamic Republic should continue talks to end the long-running nuclear dispute, but without yielding gains made by the program.
