The Overland Park, Kansas, Jewish Community Center on Thursday will host an ‘Interfaith Service of Unity and Hope’ to remember the victims of Sunday’s suspected hate killings, local KHSB Kansas City Channel 41 reported.
On Sunday, a former Ku Klux Klan leader gunned down three people outside two Jewish institutions — the JCC and the Village Shalom Senior Living Community — although the three people he killed — Dr. William Corporon, his 14-year-old grandson Reat Underwood and Terri LaMonno — were non-Jews.
The community will be addressed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach. The ceremony will also include musical tributes, a candle-lit prayer and messages from the families read by religious leaders.
The event begins at 10AM , local time, in the White Theater at the JCC, which holds 500 people, but overflow accommodations are being made to hold several hundred more who are expected. The program will be broadcast by KHSB.
The suspect in the Passover Eve killings has a long history of racism and anti-Semitism, and faces both state and federal prosecution on hate crime charges, law enforcement officials said this week. Frazier Glenn Cross, 73, was arrested on Sunday for the murders and was heard yelling, “Heil Hitler” as he was put into a police car.
