JNS.org – A report indicates that Martin Indyk, U.S. special envoy to Israel-Palestinian peace negotiations, may resign over the recent collapse of the peace talks.
According to Haaretz, Indyk has informed the Brookings Institute—where he took a leave of absence as vice president nine months ago—that he will be returning soon.
Haaretz also reported that Indyk was the anonymous U.S. senior official quoted in a wide-ranging Yedioth Ahronoth report that largely blamed the collapse of peace talks on Israel.
“There are a lot of reasons for the peace effort’s failure, but people in Israel shouldn’t ignore the bitter truth—the primary sabotage came from the settlements,” the source quoted as a U.S. senior official told Yedioth Ahronoth.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is finishing up a weeklong trip in Africa, is expected to return to Washington, DC to hold meetings on the peace process, and it is likely that the U.S. will decide to “pause” its efforts towards a solution to the conflict. Kerry has also hinted that he may release the “framework document” on the U.S. peace plan.
