“Life is what you make it,” reads the Hebrew-language targeted Facebook ad by the legendary Israeli spyshop, and officials hope recently demobilized intel personnel will do more than merely click “Like.”
Spreading chaos throughout the Arab world has prompted the Mossad to beef up its “Humint” (human intelligence) resources, according to Israeli daily Ma’ariv.
Over the last few months, select discharged members of the Jewish state’s military and civilian intelligence units have been seeing such fine-tuned, demographically targeted ads showing up in their Facebook feeds.
Clicking on the ad brings the potential recruit to the Mossad’s main site, where — rather than “Munich”-like daring undercover ops against Israel’s foes — most of the positions include a mundane alphabet soup of “Geek Squad”-level computer coding positions and crack social networking roles.
A plethora of news reports in the Arab world in recent years finger the Mossad as being behind a string of deadly and technically stunning operations, among them the assassinations of several scientists working on Iran’s nuclear program, and mysterious, devastating computer viruses that have plagued Teheran’s heavily-guarded nuclear enrichment facilities.
And the hits just keep on coming: in April, authorities in Thailand rounded up a cell of Lebanese Hizbullah-backed terrorists planning an attack against Israelis, using intel forwarded to them from Israel, according to a report in The Bangkok Post.
