New York Cabbie Suspended for 30 Days for Brandishing Nazi Swastika Armband

A New York City cab driver is facing a 30-day suspension for operated his taxi while wearing an armband branded with a Nazi swastika.
After receiving complaints from members of the public, Jewish human rights group the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) sent a letter to the chief operating officer of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). The League said it was “extremely disturbed by this provocative display,” and urged the commission to promptly investigate.
TLC subsequently suspended the cabbie’s operator’s license for 30 days after the driver pleaded guilty to violating TLC rule 54-12(e) which prohibits “any act that is against the best interests of the public.”
A source familiar with the case told The Algemeiner that the TLC named the offender as one Gabriel Diaz. The source said that New Yorkers began to report the driver to the TLC from as early as March of this year.
ADL on Friday commended the commission for taking action.
“We applaud the TLC’s swift investigation and successful prosecution of this outrageous and inflammatory gesture by a taxicab driver,” Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York regional director, said in a statement. “By openly displaying this hate symbol identified with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party while operating a New York City taxicab, the driver sent a frightening and offensive message to New Yorkers about who might be welcome – and unwelcome – in the taxicab he was driving.”
Bernstein added, “In disciplining the driver, the TLC sends a powerful message that such a vehement demonstration of hate is unacceptable, and that there are consequences for those who seek to intimidate others.”
