Jewish gold dealers in the marketplace of the Tunisian island of Djerba went on strike to protest last week’s stabbing of Jewish jeweler Gabriel Ozen, 38, a father of four.
Witnesses said they heard assailants in the Houmt Souq yelling, “the nation of Mohammed is coming back to take revenge” moments before the attack.
The stabbing was reported by Israel National News last week, which said Ozen fought the Muslim attacker, but was stabbed in the chest and rushed to intensive care in a local hospital, where he is in serious, but stable, condition.
On Tuesday, local media outlet Arrakmia published an interview with striking jeweler Nahum Mamo, who said he was dismayed by the recent violence which marred the many years of peaceful coexistence between Jews and Muslims on the island.
The report was flagged by blogger Elder of Ziyon on Tuesday. The strike is now in its second day.
