Much-loved London shawarma restaurant Solly’s is closing on Tuesday, despite a high-profile social media campaign to save the kosher eatery endorsed by One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles, the UK’s Jewish News reported.
Diners who enjoyed the restaurant were rallying support on Twitter when user Eliot Pollak, contributed on Sunday that Styles was “rumoured to be starting the campaign to #SaveSollys.”
A spokesman for the musician said Styles, a non-Jew but a tremendous aficionado of Judaism who often wears a yarmulkah, was “mortified” at the news of the restaurant closing, but he denied the singer was leading a campaign to save it. The spokesman told Jewish News, “London’s culinary scene has lost huge part of its neshama,” in Hebrew, its soul.
Other rumors pointed to a new location for the kosher favorite after the Summer, but a staff member contacted by Jewish News could not confirm the chatter.
“Today is the last day,” the staffer said. “We’re closing at 4PM. It’s very sad.”
Restaurant management tweeted: “Linda & the Solly’s team would like to thank you for your loyalty over the years. It was a pleasure! #SaveSollys“.
