Billionaire Jewish Philanthropist Moise Safra Dead at 79

JNS.org – Brazilian-Jewish financier Moise Y. Safra died June 13 of a heart attack at the age of 79.
Safra was the second of three Safra sons in a Syrian-Jewish family that came to Brazil in 1952. They founded the Safra Group in the mid-1950s in São Paulo, which has been catering to wealthy clients across Brazil ever since.
In addition to the family business, Safra provided significant funding to Jewish health, education, and other philanthropic projects across Brazil such as the building of synagogues and Jewish community centers.
Safra had developed Parkinson’s disease in recent years. He was being treated at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein before his death. He was buried Sunday, reported Reuters.
Safra’s fortune has been estimated at $2.5 billion by Forbes magazine this year. He is survived by his wive Chella Cohen Safra and their five children.
