Calls from the Obama administration and others for Israel to show restraint in its response to the murder of three teens this week are suspicious in their timing, Algemeiner Editor Dovid Efune said Tuesday in an interview on Real News TV.
In his condolence message following the news of the teens’ murder, President Obama said, “I also urge all parties to refrain from steps that could further destabilize the situation.”
Efune said on Real News, “There is no question that it is at the very least very strange that these calls for restraint always seem to happen after Hamas…, [or] whichever group, has done its worst and Israel is poising to respond and restore its deterrent, and that is obviously the case here this time.”
On Israel’s planned response to the killings he cited Ofir Akunis, deputy minister in the Office of Prime Minister Netanyahu: “What we have seen over the last few weeks is just the beginning and Israel might go a lot further even then it went during Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, where it struck 1500 Hamas targets in Gaza, to ensure that the deterrent is put back in place and reinforced.”
Addressing the failure of the Palestinian Authority to prevent the murder of the teens and to locate the perpetrators he added, “It is definitely not a secret that the Palestinian Authority is weak and ineffective on the ground and that there are groups operating right under its nose, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and very often they actually operate in unison.”
On the possibility that has emerged in recent weeks that Israel may need to come to the aid of Jordan if the ISIS terror group, now active in Iraq, sets its sights on Amman, Efune said Israel would do what was necessary to protect its allies and its borders.
“Really Israel is surrounded and will definitely do what it needs to do to protect its borders and to protect its allies in the region and that will involve covert and overt operations,” he said. “There is no question that Jordan is a very, very pivotal player because Jordan is the only stable border at the moment that Israel has.”
