Israeli army forces interdicted and foiled a Palestinian terror squad trying to infiltrate the Kibbutz Zikim area just north of Gaza, Tuesday evening.
IDF troops killed five gunmen in the bid to carry out a terror attack under cover of a heavy rocket barrage overhead, according to the IDF Spokesman.
The terrorists came ashore from the sea, apparently from nearby Gaza.
It is unclear if the Israeli Navy engaged the attackers en route to their beach landing, which took place several dozen meters from the Gaza border.
An army spotter in a watchtower identified the attackers, and alerted forces. One soldier sustained minor wounds in the firefight, Israel Radio said.
Hamas took responsibility for the attack, and police are hunting for possible other terrorists in the vicinity.
“Police units closed off the Zikim area,” Israel Police Spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld wrote in a Tweet.
“2 Terrorists from Gaza infiltrate in area. Situation under control. People told to stay inside,” he added.
